Panic Attacks and Panic Disorders

Panic Disorder is diagnosed when you have recurrent unexpected panic attacks that are generated from a fear so great that four or more of the following symptoms abruptly occur and reach a peak within 10 minutes:

  • Heart palpitations or accelerated heart rate
  • Chest pain and sweating
  • Fear of dying or possibly a feeling of choking
  • Dizzyness
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Fear of losing control or going crazy
  • Chills or hot flashes
  • Nausea or abdominal distress
  • Shortness of breath or feeling as though you are being smothered
  • Numbness or tingling sensation
  • Feelings of being detached from reality or oneself

You may also realize that you persistently fear that these attacks will occur as well as cause consequences you are not desiring.  This includes behavioral changes in yourself due to the attacks that warrant seeking the services of a psychotherapist.

You may feel an overwhelming sense of terror even though you recognize that no real danger exists.  80% of the patients visiting the Emergency Room or their doctors with these symptoms are sent home and often told there is nothing wrong.
